Paysites - Let live or become free?
To many surfers there has been, to their aggravation, a lot of paysites regarding custom content for The Sims 2 spurring up over time. Now it evidently turns out that having a paysite or even a subscriptionbased website containing TS2 items is not really permitted and not entirely legal.
This would be the reply Pas received when he asked:
Yes, running a paysite featuring content for the Sims 2 is considered to be a violation of both the Electronic Arts Terms of Service and copyright law.
This includes both content that is sold directly and content that is offered as part of a subscription service.
Additionally, the intent behind providing these tools to the Sims 2 community was to promote the sharing of content, not commercial activity. If you know of a site that is offering Sims 2 content as a pay-service, we would ask that you please let us know so that we can take the appropriate steps to address the situation.
As a result various anti-paysite people have created a website where you can download items which originally come from these paysites EA Games says are in violation of their license. But EA Games themselves do nothing with these paysites.
License clearly states that it cannot be part of a subscription based service, then what about The Sims Resource? This is a website that offers most of the downloads for free, but to get to the really wickedly good stuff and most meshes, you still need to cough up money.
Should TSR be forced to close, or make all of it’s content free and available for everyone?
